The ALANA Green Summit

Over 150 industry experts, community leaders and policy makers participated in the ALANA Green Summit on September 15, 2008 at Concordia University-St. Paul, Minnesota to explore how the ALANA (African Latino Asian and Native American communities) could help build the emerging green economy. ALANA Green Declaration, September 2008


Whereas, ALANA (African Latino Asian and Native American) communities will be the fastest growing segments of the prime labor force and prime tax base in 2030; and

Whereas, ALANA entrepreneurs are growing faster than the overall growth rates of firms and are developing the inner city, rural areas and high tech areas; and

Whereas, ALANA workers are an integral part of both the essential workers as well as the high tech workers; and

Whereas, ALANA communities embody “green” values; and

Whereas, ALANA communities have experienced the negative dimensions of the old growth model by living in heavily polluted areas or working in hazardous conditions;

Be it resolved that:

·         At least 25 percent of the workers in high tech green collar jobs are from ALANA communities by 2015;

·         At  least 25 percent of the firms in Green Businesses are from ALANA communities by 2015;

·         An intensive public education campaign on the Green Economy and its importance to ALANA communities is funded.

·         Training programs to enable ALANA Businesses and workers secure green credentials are funded.

·         Career track internship programs for ALANA high school and college youth are funded.

·         Publicly funded green projects establish goals for ALANA youth apprenticeships and ALANA firm utilization/partnership/mentorship.

·         Policy making entities at the local, state and national levels Involve ALANA representation so that they  are co-creators of the green economy;

·         Publicly funded green projects include a list of potential jobs and business opportunities.
